GH: Carriage Inn

Hoof Fin Feathers Carriage Inn is a heck of an odd name and I'm still not sure if I got it right, but the boys from TAPS called it the Carriage Inn for short and I will follow suit. The owner walked the team through in what seemed to be a very concise manner. She knew what had been reported, hadn't experienced any of it herself but matter of factly went from room to room explaining what had been told to her by numerous employees and customers. The place was almost exclusively full-bodied apparitions, a little girl with burns, numerous women (at one time the building was a brothel) and a little boy who is supposedly pleading his father's innocence in a murder, so vehemently that one woman reported that he grabbed onto her and begged her to listen to him.

There were other reports of physical interaction as well, including a waitress who was slapped on the backside and got so frightened she left for the day. There were also reports of cold spots much more severe than I'm used to hearing: where suddenly a warm room dropped to near freezing and you could see your breath, then just as quickly the temperature returned to normal. Some of these things sounded so surreal they might have been scenes cut from the original Amityville Horror film (without the threatening aspect).  One thing that also stood out was that most of the reports had some consistency to them, multiple people reporting not only seeing the same thing, but in the same area — some reports even reported seeing the same person (or ghost) from different locations, outside vs. inside.

Jay & Grant did an EMF sweep and they did detect a strong EM field in one section of the main room that corresponded roughly to one of the repeated sightings, but Grant seemed at an utter loss for how to work that into a working theory.  He seemed to want to run with the "EM fields can make you hallucinate" theory but must have realized that didn't jive with multiple witnesses at different times reporting the same thing.  He seemed to head next in the direction of, "maybe the EM field somehow helps the ghost interact with people (or 'come through')" but ended up just dropping the matter and saying he thought the EM field may or may not have something to do with something.  For once I think I completely agree.

There were a few moments of mild interest during the investigation.  Kris & Kristyn were in the basement when they heard what sounded like footsteps (or some kind of thumping) coming from above them. They headed up to the first floor but the sound still seemed to be coming from above them so they headed into the attic.  Upon arriving, they no longer heard it.  I'm just throwing this out there, but one possibility that occurred to me was steam heat.  Pipes in a steam heat system can sometimes sound like someone's banging on them, and if they're in a wall, floor or ceiling it can sound something like that thumping. That being said, I've no idea when they filmed this episode.  It could have been July for all I know, which would render my idea moot.

Jay & Grant were in the basement at a different point with the FLIR camera when Jay picked up a thermal hit of what looking like a person walking laterally across the room.  He claimed he was alone in the room at the time but Grant was there with him, so maybe Grant had gone into a different room and it was just cut weirdly, but I think it's also worth exploring the possibility that he's mistaken and Grant was actually in the room at the time.  Also, he said there was no reflective surfaces in the basement to get a heat reflection off of but I saw a metal pole going floor-to-ceiling in at least one place and the image was definitely very vertical — you could see the legs and arms, but it disappeared during a sideways movement.  I think another possibility is a heat reflection off that pole or another like it.

Dave & Steve also managed to do a bit of debunking.  They acknowledged that the reports in the room they were investigating were of full-bodied apparitions but Tango noticed the shadow of what seemed to clearly be a person moved across the room at one point and he realized it was coming from a lights outside across the parking lot.  He sent Steve out and they were able to determine that a single person walking, even a good distance away from the building, could cast a half-dozen shadows and they'd walk across the room in unison.  it was a little freaky, actually and certainly could freak out an employee who saw it out of the corner of their eye.

The crown jewel of the evening though was Jay & Grant's attempt to communicate with the little boy who had allegedly grabbed that woman.  They broke out the K-II meter ant the voice recorder per usual and started their EVP Q&A session but instead of lights on the EMF detector or silence we suddenly hear what is quite audibly a child's voice.  A few moments later we hear it again, sounding a little louder and speaking for a longer period. It froze Jay & Grant and probably half the folks at home watching.

Unfortunately that was all the evidence they had for the evening — no EVPs and nothing else but this one thing in particular really seemed bizarre and impressive.  Perhaps there is some straightforward real world explanation that we simply don't know about because this is a television show — maybe the owner lives on the second floor with her kids and they were right beneath the kids room.  I don't have an explanation for it though.  It seemed simultaneously "too good" and yet, I can't think of a good "normal" answer either.  How about you folks?

Brad @ 1:53 pm

I think I noticed some kind of speaker mounted on the wall in one scene, I know if speakers attached to amplifiers are left on they can pick up radio transmissions, but they will not be very loud. The first time I heard this through a guitar amp I thought it was paranormal until I realized the voice was talking about a sale at a local car dealership. That is the only explanation I can think of.

Lar @ 2:00 pm

I live just a few miles from the Carriage Inn as it was originally called, but the new owner (whom you saw) changed it to a more HOKEY name, spelled like one word but pronounced Hoof-Fin-Feathers Carriage Inn, as in Beef-Fish n' Fowl. But that ain't the only thing that's hokey.

I have eaten there many x's with my family. NOT ONCE. NEVER was there ever any talk of the facility being haunted. This is one of those loco yoko, well, for a better word, "haunts," with many regular faces. If there was something going on you would've known about it.

When Rhode Island's Slater Mill was investigated you could easily find local news of it. I have not seen nor heard of any news regarding this investigation. A local blogger wrote about GH the night they were there. It was filmed in May of this year. There is,& has been a for sale sign (photo emailed to Logisti) on the property for months.

There have been few cars in their lot since. Maybe they were hoping the supernatural could supersize their attendance. I drove into the parking lot Thursday night. After such NATIONAL exposure it should've been SRO. Instead it was MIA. Not a car. I'm driving by tonight & will provide a "live," traffic update in a following post.

Regarding the investigation. Please LISTEN to the voice Jay & Grant hear. Do NOT watch the video, close your eyes & LISTEN to this segment. When you do you'll HEAR something interesting. Tinkerbell er' Grant(because he obviously TINKERS with evidence)looks at his watch & says,"It really sounds like you need some help." (Now close your eyes & LISTEN). Within 4 seconds you hear the voice. Now LISTEN to Grant's reaction. LISTEN to his pitch, especially when he tells Jay, "It sounded like it was coming from that chair." Grant's voice cracks just like a little school boy.

Isn't just a tad suspicious that only Tinkerbell has the paranormal experience next to him. The voice was nearest him, like the lamp that moved, the bed sheet that pulled, picture frame that turned, table that jumped….If you still don't believe it was the GRANTED one, then it was obviously something else explainable, not the unexplained.

Now WATCH the clip. I have kids. Look at Grant's face. If that isn't the face of a child that's done something wrong but lies about it, I'll eat my HoofFinfeathers.

Yeti33 @ 2:12 pm

I agree with Lar, Grant's face was classic. I am starting to wonder if Jay knows what Grant is up too. From watching the earlier seasons they have changed their views so many times that it is starting to get rediculous. I could actually hear the "kids" voice better on Pilgrim's camera's than I could on the EVP's that the got.

Lar- your point on the restuarant wanting this to get them more business was spot on. Why did the owner have to wear her Chef coat for the tour and after they packed up all of there equipment? Could she be more obvious.

I have said this many times but why do they put the worst investigation in the second half hour? I can't stand that. Destination truth is a far better show than GH.

Handsty @ 2:23 pm

I thought the show was very boring. I did notice G look at his watch and it seemed odd to me. Maybe he just wanted to know what time it was. Maybe he had to take some medication. And I agree with Yeti33 about the EVPs. They (J&G)must have seen/heard everyone's complaints about how we can't make out what the "spirits" are saying. Now, it's overkill. I wish they would used more of the comedy team "Tat (Steve) and Tango". I would rather watch them than Joe Chinn and Kris as the blind leading the blind. Overall a boring show and the second part was just plain pathetic.

windwhisperer @ 2:31 pm

Great recap Logisti. At the beginning of the show the manager said she heard someone say her name and she could feel breath on her neck. I don't think ghosts are capable of breath are they?

Could this just be a lot of made up stories?
Is the owner pushing for business?
The show led to far too many questions.

And I swear I will never believe an evp unless I record it myself. But it does keep the show interesting. I always love the look on their faces when they hear something.
Grant did look a little freaked out.

jim @ 3:33 pm

I too live about a mile away from the carriage inn and i've never heard any stories about the place being haunted or being a brothel.
theres other spots closeby that are supposed to be haunted(mercy brown gravesite, ladd school to name two)I'm hoping they'll check out some of those on future episodes.
btw I met brian harnois where I work a week or two ago my company hired him as a temp,he seems like a real nice guy.I asked why he left ghi and he said reality tv doesnt pay too well and it was keeping him away from his family for weeks at a time.
I've got a million questions about the show but i did'nt want to bug him cos he probably gets that all the time here in r.i.

tracy @ 9:01 pm

i haven't seen GH or been to this site for so long, but tonight i finally watched this episode and it spooked me. i just thought it was spooky, but those voices sounded weird. my main point is the second voice sounded like someone (a woman) singing to me. did nobody else hear this? no one on the show mentioned it and no one here is mentioning it. it sounded like a recording almost. anyone?

Harry @ 9:01 pm

I;m glad I'm not the only one who noticed the greater clarity of the EVPs in recent episodes, especially compared to the first two seasons. Did someone manage to convince the spirits they needed to clear their throats and speak up when the GH crew is around?

As for Grant, the technology that would really give credence to their investigations would be a polygraph. Wire Grant to it, and ask him "Have you ever faked or planted evidence during an investigation?" I'd love to see the results!

Stephen @ 12:32 am

Hmm… partway through watching HoofFinFeathers, and I've just gotten through the "child voice" segment. First, right before the child voice first appears, there's a sound that's very similar to the white noise from a radio tuning into a station. Second, at that point Jay is touching something with a number of knobs on it. It looks like it could be an air conditioner or a radio. Lar, can you tell me what that is?

Could Jay and Grant somehow have turned on a radio? The second "child voice" snippet sounds like singing to me. It's tuned and rhythmic.

bullerspoke @ 4:44 am

Boring show indeed. Somehow I feel like it was intentionally low-key or boring after last week paranormal bonanza. A way to give the show credibility and give meat to that eighty percent slogan. Maybe I'm being overly suspicious, but still, I can't shake that feeling.

As for the owner wanting business, well, of course they want like every other commercial site GH has visited, some even strike up partnerships and do ghost events with TAPS. No commercial location goes on a national paranormal show without assessing the business opportunity. No matter how credible or well-documented hauntings might or might not be, the tv exposure is worth quite a lot for any business. That's partly why I prefer when GH does private homes.

As for polygraphs, talk about hokey stuff. I would even go so far as to say polygraphs are pseudo-scientific and as credible as the theory on cold spots. It's really all random, and from what I understand, many, if not most courts in the U.S (and assuredly in Europe) does not admit polygraph tests as evidence in court. There is no objective science that can assess when somebody is lying, neither psychological, neurological, biological, sociological and I could keep going.

The EVP's. Unimpressive, and impossible to make anything out of. Could be anything really. Now, I'm no fan of EVP's (well, I like them, they are fun, but they have no credit in my mind), but this really was all random and garbled sound. They did sound like transmissions of some kind or travelling sound, the sound was "canny". A sidenote is, that since it was audible to J&G it really wasn't any EVP's but VP's or an actual sound. I'd go for the latter.

Lar @ 7:22 am

I HAVE the screen shot that'll ba'low the lid off this case.
I have emailed it to Logistic since I cannot post it here.

First, yes Stephen the unit in question is either an AMP or air purifier. Watch the video. The moment Grant hears the FIRST voice you see Jay with his hands on the knob.

Now the BIG news…
I have a screen that proves the voice heard was coming from a speaker. I will set this up. Watch this video:
YouTube – Ghost Hunters Carriage Inn Part 2
or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex1EiMtU1iY

At 1:14 LOOK up towards the top of Jay's hat. There is a BLACK BOX. Jay is standing DIRECTLY BELOW it. You can clearly see it's a SPEAKER!It is at this EXACT moment the voice is heard.

Logisti can you share this photo on the forum?

Logisti @ 9:19 am

Everyone, I absolutely love to see folks getting involved in the discussion and taking screenshots from the show but please use a photo sharing service like Flickr. That way you can share the image with everyone immediately and don't have to wait for my lazy arse to check my email.

P.S. the write-up for the second-halfer is coming, I'm just headed out of town for the week and will write it from the road when I have some time!

Lar @ 9:22 am

Here is the screenshot: Once you click on the pic, use the magnifier icon (above the right corner of the photo)to better see the speaker over his head.

Stephen @ 11:14 am

DeBunkinator! I love it!

So, we have speakers in the room. We have Jay fiddling with controls on something that might be a radio. We have a between-station tuning sound on the audio. The voice isn't clear enough to understand. As far as I'm concerned, the voice is not compelling evidence.

Brenny @ 12:03 pm

something about that watch is bothering me. I noticed it immediately when watching the show and something told me to remember it. Is it possible to have some kind of a voice recorder on a watch? He looks like he pushes some kind of a button then quickly pulls his shirt down to try to cover the watch..( why do this if he was just checking the time?)…then miraculously there is a voice that shows up a moment later…. a voice that sounds very tinny. He does this as J is walking away – not when he is standing right next to him. I also agree that he looks guilty as hell, just like me son does when he did something bad! J doesn't even seem to be as impressed with it as you think he would. Almost as if he is thinking "here we go again!"

September 21, 2008

NeoGunKuruma @ 10:19 am

I noticed the "tinny" sound also. My Uncle is an expert in working with sound, so I really want to see what he thinks. Honestly, when watching the episode, I really had a gut feeling the sound was fake. At MossBeach Distillery wasnt purposly tricking TAPS, however, this place seems like they want to trick TAPS. Probably to drum up buisness like Lar mentioned.

Lar @ 10:58 pm

The place is closed 3 days a week. They gotta' be hurtin'. There's a for sale sign out front. The hours are cut back Thursday -Sunday. Ya' can't tell me this wasn't planted, not the evidence, but the idea to use TAPS as a vehicle to make the business MORE SOUND!
I'll have to go there sometime this week to look for the speaker, or what looks like a speaker that was above Jays head, and the unit he's adjusting just as they hear the first voice.

September 22, 2008

Stephen @ 12:34 am

I love it– our first on-site investigation! Please see if you can get a picture of that thing. If that's not a radio, it would be interesting to see where the speaker controls are.

Brenny @ 9:02 am

another thing about Grant and his watch….as I watched the youtube clip on the link above, there is a thermal image of Grant and he is again doing something with his watch on his left arm….then you hear the voice. I don't know exactly what I am getting at, but it just bothers me. Any thoughts about this watch?

NeoGunKuruma @ 11:40 am

@Lar:
And a "for sale" sign? Gah, is there any more evidence needed to accuse them of sharades? (technicly yes, we need to prove the existence of speakers there).
Also, if for any reason, the "black boxes" are NOT present when you check, then take a photo to provide the damning evidence.

I still feel the audio was electronic-produced. My Uncle might have time to analyse it later.

But, yeah, this place seems to be set-up all around.
