GHI: Cape Town Castle
One thing I noticed right off the bat about this investigation is that they devoted half an episode to it. I mean, a full half. Normally Ghost Hunters and GHI have been airing one investigation for about 40 minutes, and another for the remaining; the second investigation inevitably feels rushed. This is perhaps primarily the fault of the post-production team at Pilgrim, but I thought it was worth pointing out that I thought they did a good job here by splitting the episodes up evenly.
That being said, why exactly did this investigation merit a full half the episode? I'm just kidding, but seriously it seemed odd to me that they wouldn't cut this investigation down to a third or a quarter-episode when they have so often done that to somewhat dull investigations in the past. Not that the investigation was wholly dull, it had its moments, but for some reason I just couldn't get that into it. Maybe it was the leftover eye-rolling from the prior investigation's reveal, I'm not sure.
In any case, what can I say about this castle? It had a couple of nice dungeons! Pretty much all the activity took place there. First, Barry went into a smaller dungeon that looked like the epitome of the word "dungeon" — I mean, all it needed were some shackles hanging about 8 feet up on the wall and it would be exactly the sort of dungeon seen in every popular TV show, movie or cartoon that ever featured one. He sat in this place holding the dictaphone up to his ear, I guess because he wanted it to record whatever he was hearing.
At one point we can hear an audible sound as Barry jerks hit hand — apparently he felt something hit the device. Personally, I wouldn't rule out a big drop of water falling from the ceiling and happening to hit the dictaphone but that's just me reaching for a rational explanation, I don't have one that's a total lock so I'll definitely mark this off as a point of interest in the investigation.
In a separate dungeon, which seemed to be an enormous man made underground chamber, Robb and Dustin were trying to do EVPs but they kept hearing a ringing sound. At first Dustin thought it was his ears ringing (AKA tinnitus) but Robb was hearing it too, and before long so were we. The thing is, and this really annoyed me, it sounded exactly like feedback from a microphone. I can't think of any reason why they would be carrying around speakers that would broadcast the audio from Robb's microphone and create the feedback, but this didn't sound "a lot" like feedback, it sounded "exactly" like feedback.
…and yet somehow this was thought to be potentially supernatural.
It blows my mind that no one so much as used the word "feedback" while experiencing it, reviewing the evidence or talking to the client during the reveal. In fact, during the reveal Robb acted surprised that their host said he had been in that dungeon many times and never heard anything like that sound in there. Of course not! The most likely explanation was it was coming from the GHI equipment! I don't think I've wanted to scream at the television or tear my hair out more than I did while watching the discussions of this sound.
There were two interesting EVPs — one of them wasn't even a sound but Barry, who I appreciate for his attempts to learn a bit of the native languages in order to do EVP sessions in the native tongue, had asked (in Afrikaans) any spirit nearby to make a noise, and in response there seems to be the sound of a door closing on the recording. What makes this interesting is that according to Barry, not only did no one hear this sound at the time, but he had multiple audio recordings and this sound (which is not faint) only showed up on one of them. I found this to be extremely intriguing, although we weren't presented with enough evidence to know if Barry is correct or simply mistaken.
The second EVP was while Brandy was talking — literally. It's one of those things that is a bit subtle, but once you listen to it a few times you can't mistake that it sounds as if someone begins to whisper something just before Brandy starts talking. This could just be the human brain interpreting patterns where none exist, but I thought it was one of the more compelling EVPs I've heard in some time, despite not being able to make out a single word — that's how much I thought it sounded like a real whisper. Of course, for all we know it might have been the sound guy whispering to the camera guy, so I still wouldn't get too excited over it.
When all was said and done, I think the feedback just overshadowed the investigation for me. There wasn't much else to note, and while what there was seemed pretty interesting, GHI didn't deign to deem Cape Town Castle haunted. I found this particularly odd since in the first investigation of this episode they labeled the Nottingham Road Hotel as haunted even after debunking half the claims and coming up with evidence of equivalent (to my mind) stature.

Exactly Logisti! How can they label the first one haunted, but the second one not??? Especially with Barry "Getting touched" and all the "mysterious paranormal feedback" (Rolls eyes).
This show is really started to irritate me badly.
I do find Brandy to be cute, so I may watch just for her.

Again they put in subtitles for the English speaking South African host. I thought it was silly until at the end of the episode he was speaking w/o subtitles and they cut away from him to view the GHI cars leaving – I couldn't understand a word he said! Now I think I love subtitles!
You know the GHI investigators actually have questions prepared for them in the languages of the different countries they visit. They memorize them and then ask them during the investigation. I know we've speculated about this in previous posts and talked about them having a translator with them – I think it's great that they've thought of this and put the extra effort in communicating in the country's language of origin. (Just brought this up in case anyone thought Barry was fluent in Afrikaans, and Latin, and Romanian…) I like him but I don't think he's THAT amazing!

"I can't think of any reason why they would be carrying around speakers that would broadcast the audio from Robb's microphone and create the feedback, but this didn't sound "a lot" like feedback, it sounded "exactly" like feedback."
ah 1,2…1,2,3,5 (rock-on GHI style)
As a singer of a band…YES…that was FEEDBACK. I can't say how that happened but they could have spent allot more time debunking that sound beyond turning off Robb's microphone.
But what do i know, maybe Ian Curtis is haunting that place.

The 'feedback' spirit was just sad. I cannot believe they tried to sell that at the reveal. But (and I posted this question on another website) did anyone else think Robb looked pissed when Willem laughed at Barry's reaction to being touched?

gem, I recently went to Europe and briefly stopped in a number of countries so I memorized a few useful French phrases before going out in public in France, then memorized a few Italian phrases for Italy, etc. I thought Barry might be doing something like that — not dissimilar to the card idea.
My primary point wasn't that I think he's a linguistic genius, it was I think he's very thorough and that gives me more respect for him as an investigator. I haven't seen any other team member attempt to speak anything but English.

I know. But Donna said in an interview that they were all given cue cards with questions on them in the foreign language they needed for that investigation and they all memorized the phrases and asked them during EVP sessions- except for Dustin – he had to keep pulling out his card to ask a question; they were joking about it.
I do think Barry's great at languages and at investigating.

Great point, TP! The best one yet for this investigation. I also think Brandy is cute! She also had sense enough to ask the ghost at the Nottingham Road Hotel the one question I've been longing to finally hear, "Do you understand that you're dead?" That really cracked me up!

The feedback bugged me also, and I was sure it was their equipment, that was obviously.
I thought they did a great job with the first half of the show, this other investigation however, not so good. I am glad though that barry did learn some phrases in the native tongue. I did not know about the cards.
I was surprised that they labeled the first place as haunted. But then, I was thinking… Maybe they took into account what they felt. If it really was such a strong feeling in that kitchen area, plus the EVPs responding to what was happening (intelligent), and the weather thing, they might have felt it more haunted then we could experience through the TV. Of course I agree there should be more evidence before they say a place is haunted, otherwise, as TAPs so often say, it’s just a personal experience, a story. But who knows, maybe their way of thinking is different and they also take their experiences into account.
Spite all that, I am enjoying the show. But I still think Japanese ghosts would be really scarry!!!

Barry's sound…So would that be an ENP? Electronic NOISE Phenomenon? The "theory" behind EVPs, themselves, is a stretch for me, but now independent noises (even if made by a spirit) can also show up only on one recorder? So does the spirit have to coordinate his activities by manipulating the device AND slamming the ethereal door at the same time?
