GH: Clapp Memorial Library
TAPS headed over to the Clapp Memorial Library to investigate experiences reported by the night custodian, Jacques. The custodian himself said he didn't even believe in ghosts or anything paranormal before he started working at this library.
Jay was sick with Laryngitis but still popped by for some investigating with Grant. Kris investigated with Tango and Steve volunteered to man the central command area, which reminded me of something that's been bugging me for some time: Since they often have a team of 5 and one of them is usually (presumably) sitting in front of those monitors, how is it that no one ever sees the video evidence they capture while it's happening — that would be helpful in terms of being able to say, "Get to the master bedroom now! Something's going on in there!" Ahh, well.
While Jay & Grant played with the thermal camera upstairs, Kris & Dave were in the basement and started hearing noises. First they tried the old "ask the spirits to lower the temperature" bit and seemed to actually get a 5 degree drop. Prior to the experiment Tango had said it would take 10 degrees to convince him, but while perhaps not convincing the temperature drop did seem off. Kris also felt like someone scratched her hand at one point while she was taking temperature readings.
The two heard a voice shortly after that, which was tracked down to a talking book, like a speak n' spell. Then there was some bizarre noise that sounded loud even through the production crew's microphones. Tango described it as something akin to a plastic book cover being slid back and forth, and quite loud, but when he approached where the sound was coming from it abruptly stopped.
But aside from that there really wasn't anything else. Kris was able to determine that the desk belonging to the librarian thought to haunt the building actually was originally located in a completely different section of the library — something that Jacques had suspected because of the activity in that section of the library.
I did find it curious that Grant reported no one had any personal experiences except for Kris being touched. The loud noises Kris, Tango (and everyone else in that area) heard seemed like a more impressive experience than someone reporting being touched, but it would seem Grant didn't know about it. If there are communications problems within TAPS that's just another thing they need to work on if we're to take them seriously.

Logisti – once again, you point out exactly the same arguments my husband and I made last night to just about every "piece of evidence" TAPS uncovered.
As interesting as someone getting touched is, I agree, you can't really measure it. It could have been anything. It didn't happen again, and the touch didn't make her knock over or anything (like Dustin or Steve getting attacked in previous episodes).
And why did no one else experience anything else? Not that Kris fibbed or anything – she might have really felt something. But to consider that as honest evidence, to me, seems irresponsible.
However, TAPS didn't get any other evidence, interestingly enough.
Why is it that TAPS rarely says, "What is your name?" instead of, "are you Lydia" (or whomever)? This also really bugs me – but as a former reporter I'm very critical of their research and interviewing skills – the ways they garner information. A lot of the questions they ask seem to be leading. Maybe that's how it's done, but IMO, that leads to somewhat biased data.

So. We've got the talking book going off and the sound of the book covers; but the only personal experience TAPS seems to get exicted about was Kris' claim of being touched….Lame. I may be wrong, but so far this season it seems that TAPS is going out of their way to convince us that Kris is really on the show because she's an investigator – not just the token eye-candy.
And has Steve's 'face-time' been cut back? It seems we get more shots of Kris' butt or of her lounging seductively on a couch in the dark, than of Steve doing any investigating. ***DISCLAIMER: I enjoy a butt shot as much as the next guy, but there are entire stations dedicated to butt shots and women lounging seductively. I watch GH to see people hunt ghost.***
Now, the information Kris dug up (and you knew she was doing some serious research – she had her glasses on) on the original location of the librarian's desk was interesting since it coincided with Jacques' suspicions. But even that info just seemed to be tacked on at the end.
I don't know about this show….

Imagine, temperature fluctuations in a, large old basement! At least they didn't use that as "evidence". As for Kris, with the relative lameness of the investigations this year (see also the Attleboro posts) at least there is something to keep male viewers watching … and let's give her credit for seeming to be more level-headed than most of her female and male counterparts on Ghost Hunters International.

Crow – fixed your comment as requested — Also, I've installed some software which should allow everyone to edit their comments for 15 minutes after posting. Not sure how good it is, let me know if anyone notices any problems.

Thanks, Logisti. Let's give this thing a test drive….See you on the flip side….
Hey! Get me! I just edited……Whoo hoo

I hate to say it, because she seems like a nice girl, but when Kris was describing her experience to the camera after the fact, my first thought was 'she's lying!' The way she self-consciously touched her ear while describing the incident and the look on her face just seemed as if she was thinking 'I can't believe the BS I'm hearing myself say!' I would rather give her the benefit of the doubt and just think that maybe she's not comfortable in front of the camera yet, but it did make me wonder.
Lil D @ 1:57 pm
Ronin – I agree with you.
Personally, I think she's on the show only because of who she knows (and is with) NOT her ghosthunting skills and that bugs me.
I'm biased when talking about Tango because I think he's adorable, but at least he has some debunking ability and he'll investigate. Kris chickens out or spends her time flirting with Jay and Tango. It gets really old. She may be nice but I think she's pretty dumb. I don't think she should be given the opportunity that she has been.
Again, my bottom line is that GH needs to give me something more for evidence – like an EVP or something. I could just watch the show for Tango, but I'm not sure I'm that dedicated.

I find it hard to believe that the library didnt have any pictures around of the librarian. If the night employee; wanted to know where her desk once was…..all he had to do was ask
…Its not that they dont find anything ..its how they play some things up …that bothers me.
Why did J show up at all…that was lame..
Logisti @ 11:21 am
Although I found Jacques to be credible, it is certainly possible he already knew and was pretending to only suspect where the desk had been. At the end of the investigation though he seemed so excited to have that picture of the librarian at her desk that I can't find it in my heart to suspect him of deceit — although I will concede the possibility. Either way it doesn't prove anything supernatural in any case, so I feel it's a moot point.
As for Jay showing up, I think he felt he needed to put in an appearance (or maybe his contract told him that he needed to) but frankly I was happy that he was there and sorry to see him leave. I hesitate to bring this up, but it's on my mind so I will — I do want to emphasize that it's pure speculation on my part.
If I have my timeline right, around the time Jason leaves Kris & Tango begin to hear noises. First the speak-n-spell type book starts talking as if someone's pushing the buttons, then something starts making a loud noise Tango describes like a vinyl book jacket being scraped, but the noise stops the moment Tango approaches it.
Now, if you'll recall we hardly saw Steve all night, because he volunteered to sit at the monitors. After Jay left halfway through the night I expected to see Grant investigate a little with Steve, but that didn't appear to happen.
So if Jay went home, and Steve was sitting at the monitors, what was Grant doing?
Also, there is a bizarre parallel with what we saw during the Attleboro House reveal. In that case a bell rang and we know Grant was standing right next to it when it rang, but Jay oddly claims nobody was anywhere near it. In this case Grant is missing during the most unexplained (and well documented/proven, unlike Kris being touched) event of the evening, and for unexplained reasons no one mentions that event during the reveal.
numyer @ 10:12 pm
This episode seemed like a big deal in the previews, but the actual show was ZZzzzzzz. While they made a point about Kris being touched, as mentioned it was rather curious nothing else became of the loud noises we could all hear – anytime later in the show.
Temperature fluctuations in old basements – borrriing!
It's true you'd think they would have pictures of their first Librarian, although at one point they mentioned the date of the building and it seemed when they mentioned her time there it was some years after the fact, so I don't see how she was the first, but I may have heard wrong about the dates.
The "Speak n Spell" book was either very paranormal or extremely questionable. If it can be explained away by low battery and moisture, then how come we only hear it a couple times when they are a ways away investigating and by the time they discover it – the book is never heard from again.
Dixie @ 7:54 am
The library now has a link on its home page for GH….http://www.clapplibrary.org/...
Thanks, Logisti for your reply you seem very fair and open minded.
bill kelly @ 8:32 pm
just an FYI. Kris has acted in some b-grade movies so …..but i agree. as a communications graduate they tell you to watch people. touching your ear is sometimes a tell for people who are nervous or dont believe what they are saying. ummmmm, i wonder. at least donna, lisa and paula ever got caught pulling their ear while talking to the camera.
i agree with everyone. if this show continues on this same path, i'll wait til destination truth comes on before watching Scifi. least that show keeps my interest lately
Robbin @ 10:54 pm
All I can say is I hope tomorrow night brings about something that is not a six alarm snooze. Boring and total BS this whole thing.
beedoo @ 2:35 am
Just a sidenote, but I had a Speak & Spell (and a Speak & Math!) as a child, and they would randomly turn on at times and start talking, sometimes waking me and my sister up at night. Even though I was a big believer in ghosts as a kid, I always attributed it to basic electronic weirdness, not ghosts.
So unless the Speak & Spell manufacturing plant is packaging ghosts in the circuitry, I guarantee that having a Speak & Spell behave strangely is not unusual and probably not supernatural.
chimin in @ 3:15 pm
This is an interesting case personally for me for a few reaons. I've been in the Clapp library without knowing it's history and it's an odd place that will give you odd feelings even if nothing else, especially in the lower level, even in the daytime.
I didn't know it was allegedly haunted until I heard about the investigation, inquiring about cameras filming outside passing by it one night. I find it surprising that they have not gone to the many closed down yet allegely very haunted insane asylums in the area, though I can imagine why (unsafe buildings, allegedly violent "haunting" activity).
As a scientist I would agree that their methodology is less than sacrosanct and their methods of data collection shoddy but every once in awhile barring hoaxes a good piece of video evidence does show up.
But their questions suck, they use bad camera placement, too many people, and their producers add too many scripted lines and other things to try to spice the show up. I would change much of their manner of investigation.
Were they to change their methodology they would probably gather more and better evidence in places that are allegedly "haunted" and be able to debunk places without any activity more easily. They should do more follow up as well.
One should realize too that the show has producers that go beyond taps and this makes for it appearing less scientific and more geared to the masses, putting on an entertaining tv show.

ihad a Speak and Spell too when I was a kid, and when the batteries got low, the device would start talking in a higher pitched voice which sounded freaky. Left on long enough, the speaker would start to make a crackling noise, and the display would start lighting up random segments while the voice began to chant random gibberish. This scared the crap out of me when I was little, and thanks to the child resistant battery cover and the soft power becomming frozen in the "on" state, i had to chuck it against the wall to make it stop! I spent many nights awake, terrified, just thinking about that thing.Amazingly, the thing survived the violent impact juts fine, snd for there on, i used it with an AC adapter.
