SV Podcast 003: The Return of TAPS

Before you listen I want to preemptively apologize on two counts. First, if you've been listening you probably noticed that in the first two podcasts I sound like I'm on the phone. Well, we tried to fix that in this episode, but it turns out it didn't work too well. I've cleaned it up a bit but I still sound like I'm talking out of a toilet (in homage to roto-rooter, of course) so my apologies for that. We're still experimenting with the sound and we hope to finally nail it next episode.

The second apology is if I seem a bit too hard on TAPS at certain points of the discussion. I admit, there are times when I find occasional moments on the show make me want to yell at the television like it's a football game. At least during the football game it seems to help. Still, I think some of you will find this our best episode to-date, so without further ado, I bid you Enjoy!

Hmmmm. Since no one has commented on this podcast, I'll give it a go. (I don't want you guys to feel unappreciated.)

You said something about an authentic EVP should show up on only one recorder. Just curious why?

Logisti @ 12:55 pm

Crow - I moved your part 2 to the forums

re: EVP on only one recorder, an EVP is supposedly the result of a spirit interacting directly with the recorder itself, which is one of the reasons Jay & Grant have mentioned a couple of times that if you hear something when it happens, then it's technically not an EVP — although it still may be paranormal.

So if a spirit is manipulating the electronics of one recording device to record a message that would otherwise be inaudible/not exist then it stands to reason that message would appear *only* on the single recording device that the spirit manipulated.

Therefore, any anomaly appearing on multiple recording devices can be confirmed to actually be an actual audible sound (or general interference) coming from inside the room. In this way we would be better able to separate true EVP's from the sound guy whispering to the camera guy that he's bored to tears.

…and then having that later translated by TAPS during the analysis into a ghost saying, "I've been caught for years"

CrowTRobot @ 1:12 pm

OK. That makes sense. I knew an EVP wasn't suppose to be heard as it happens; I guess I didn't really understand that it was manipulating the recording device in order for it to be heard later.

Good one.

Kevin @ 6:00 pm

So we're supposed to believe a spirit from the 1800's, or even the 1970's for that matter, is able to manipulate a digital voice recorder?

Logisti @ 7:22 pm

I'm certainly not asking anyone to believe that on this site, but yes that's basically what TAPS and many other paranormal investigators believe.

Kevin, I too have a difficult time believing ghosts are manipulating recording devices (I'm not sure I buy the whole EVP thing to begin with). However, the theory that an EVP would show up on only one mic instead of all mics for the reasons stated above made some sense.

You can not be serious a bat that's what u came up with I think you have bat's in your head! Then you say it was Tango I think he would have said something, and also it might be a security guard, you guy's are reaching.Just call a spade a spade it was a ghost!!!!!!

Logisti @ 7:31 pm

Depending on which piece of footage you are referring to (we discuss several and you mention the proposed explanations for two different ones) calling a "spade a spade" would mean we have an apparent flying blotch roughly the size of a bird or bat going across the diameter of the lighthouse interior (and that's all we know for sure) or we have a shadow, which could potentially be a ghost, or it could be cast from someone below, or it could be an actual person standing there.

We simply don't know, and suggesting that we *do* know (and that's it's a ghost) is a bit premature.

Kevin @ 8:58 pm

It could be a ghost. Or it could be an alien. Or a fairy. Based on the evidence (or lack of), each is as likely to exist as the others.

Logisti @ 9:14 pm

Perhaps ghosts are really just aliens in disguise…

…or did I just BLOW YOUR MIND?

Kevin @ 11:18 pm

Wow man. Far out! Or maybe ghosts are time travelers, or people from a parallel universe that occasionally overlaps, or leaks into, our own. Aren't those explanations as valid as the theory that ghosts are spirits, or residual energy, from the dead?

Stephen @ 11:22 pm

I'm pretty sure BigDaddy's referring to Waverly– the "running legs". I'd be interested if he has some observation that contradicts the theory that it's somebody running past in a jacket… because that's what it looks like to me.

But I'm with Logisti. It was aliens. Pirate ninja aliens, in league with hobos for world domination.
