SV Podcast 002: Greatest Thermal Hits

Hello all! Hope everyone is enjoying the Skeptical Viewer podcast. In this episode, Mike and I look at the Ghost Hunters' use of thermal infrared cameras. We look at some great moments with FLIR (Nanteos Mansion, Dr. Ellis, Toys of Terror, Charlie Chaplin Studios, and Lisheen Ruins) and some not-so-great moments (Crescent Hotel, Harrington Home, and the Manson Murders). Then, in our Anomalies segment, we take a close look at TAPS's two visits to the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Finally, we go over GHI's recent episode set in Frankenstein's castle.

CrowTRobot @ 9:46 am

When I clicked on the podcast, it came out at a much higher speed (much like an album played at 45 or 78 rpms). Is there something I need to do? The first podcast still plays at the appropriate speed. Please help…….I MUST HAVE MY PODCAST!!!

Thanks

Stephen @ 2:26 pm

I'll probably need to drop the sample rate; I'll need to do that this evening. (Sorry, works fine on my Mac.) If you subscribe to the podcast in a podcatcher, you should be able to download and play the MP3 just fine.

I was doing fine until I got to this:

"…If you subscribe to the podcast in a podcatcher, you should be able to download and play the MP3 just fine."

I am sooooo '70s (insert goofy embarrassed smiley face here).

However, I'll see what I can do……..If I'm not back by Wednesday - start an EMF sweep. And bring that thermometer thingy that finds cold-spots.

I've uploaded a downsampled version, which I hope will work. Otherwise, try clicking the direct download link, and your browser should be up to the task of playing it.

Crow, if you should die from lack of podcasty goodness, try to leave some good Mystery Science Theater lines on the EVP recorder. I miss that show…

CrowTRobot @ 11:12 am

Woohoo……….I'll be back in an hour…

OK. I'm back. Thanks for waiting…

Another excellent show. You touched on something that has bothered me for a while - their 'efforts' to debunk evidence. The apparition at Eastern State Pen in particular. They go back to try to debunk because it looks like a person in a black sheet, but apparently they don't bother to take a black sheet big enough to cover a person.
Their attempts at the Stanley seemed a bit weak; and we won't even mention their thorough 2-3 minute attempt with the lamp. Still, they've got me. I'm looking forward to the new season.

GHI…..Umph. Unfortunately I think you may be spot on with Donna going Psychic soon, and this show going 'MH-lite'. Donna's always tried to sell that whole "I feel something's here" card; but so far, nobody's bought it. Barry could play the character that always gets possessed.

And speaking of MH, they have this girl on there that doesn't really do anything; but she goes along anyway - kind of like somebody's sister who's not quite right so even thought she gets to go to a regular school, it's on a different bus, and she doesn't get out much so you have to take her with you everywhere you go because your mom tells you, "Take her with you. She wants go with the big kids to hunt ghosts. TAKE HER OR YOU'RE NOT GOING!", so you take her and all she does is cower and scream and look like she's wet her pants although that's not unusual for her…

Anyway, I think that might be Shannon's role.

I finally got around to listening to podcast 002. Another great show!

Except for the beginning. That guy whose comments you responded to is obviously an idiot. He should be banned from the site.

Looking forward to 003… Keep up the great work!

A few comments on EM meters that you may be interested in. I think you guys are on the right track with pointing out the misuse of electronics by people who don't understand electronics.

In general, you can't really make base line readings to subtract out when you are in a room full of electronics. There are too many devices that transmit intermittently. I'll cover a few here.

Cell phones for instance, when not being used, still periodically communicate with the cell towers in short bursts. The more remote the location, the stronger the transmission, and the less often it happens. It may come out as seldom as once every few minutes, and can be up to 5 watts in older phones.

Car remotes are in almost everyones pockets. They could be accidentally, or purposefully, pressed. They typically emit 10 mW at 300 or 433 MHz.

Camera equipment can emit high power levels when first turned on. Any equipment that uses older style CRTs for viewing ( as opposed to LCDs like in more modern equipment) has a special circuit called a degaussing coil. The degaussing coil purposefully creates a momentary, very strong magnetic field to remove any magnetic fields from the CRT. Most of these shows have cameras everywhere which makes using an EM meter pretty much useless.

Ham radios act have short bursts as well. I think you guys already nailed this one.

In general, anything carried by the camera crew or investigators will register much higher than FM or AM radio stations due to the proximity. Also, if they knew what they were doing, and really wanted to know where the signals came from, they would use a wide band spectrum analyzer. It may cost a little more, but it is still cheaper than one high end camera.

I hope this helps your efforts to analyze the electronics used in this series.
