PS: Requiem
The PRS team heads to a home in Allentown Pennsylvania where a girl reports having her bed shaken and being touched on the neck by an entity in her bedroom. She also gets feelings of dread in the old barn outside and her mother reports having heard someone wheezing loudly at a time she was alone in the barn.
The family knew that one of the previous owners had killed himself in the barn and the folks from Paranormal State decided to start their investigation there. They had "Dead Time" inside the house and attempted to contact the spirit of the former owner but absolutely nothing happened (which, believe it or not, is unusual for this show… which is one of the reasons I don't cover it as regularly).
Ryan brings in Chip Coffey at this point and Chip very quickly is telling Ryan that the man who killed himself in the barn does not enter the house and is not the entity in the girl's bedroom. He then goes on to say he felt the presence of a little boy in the house, which seemed to surprise Ryan. Asking around at some of the neighbors to get more information on the deceased former owner, they also ask if anyone knew of a little boy dying in the house. They did.
In fact, they gave Ryan the name of the family that owned the property before the man who committed suicide and Ryan set up an interview with a woman who had grown up in the house long ago. She confirmed that her younger brother had a chronic illness which eventually resulted in him suffocating in the middle of the night when he was eleven years old.
Now, I'll mention that during the second "Dead Time" (one in the house to contact the boy, one in the barn to contact the man) there were a couple of doors that seemed to mysteriously open and some weird things happened to the camera feeds, but as usual they made no effort to actually present enough of the facts to really consider if something truly inexplicable actually happened. What interests me more is that Chip Coffey once again seems to come onto the scene and have some fairly specific "impressions" out of nowhere that turn out to be correct.
Now, Ryan and Chip both make it a point to mention that Chip isn't given any information going into a case — they could be lying but it's unfair to assume that. Chip could secretly do a bit of research before arriving on-scene, but with the kind of information he comes up with it seems unlikely he'd be able to get it without a few people knowing he'd been digging around.
The remaining possibility (other than actual psychic abilities) would be that he actually just guesses — and of course some of those guesses could be consciously or subconsciously guided by cues picked up from the environment, but in that case with such specific "impressions" we would expect far more incorrect guesses than accurate ones.
And that may be the case, we don't know how the show is cut down; but I have to admit that on the show it comes off very impressive. If it is a parlor trick then it's a very good one and I certainly can't nail down how it's done.

Thanks for posting your comments about the "Paranormal State" episode entitled "Requiem."
Please allow me to provide some information about how I work with the PRS team. Here's how the process works:
I receive a telephone call, inviting me to appear on an episode of "Paranormal State." The only information that I am given is the name of the city that I will be flying into.
When I arrive on location, I am kept completely isolated until it is time for me to conduct the initial walk-through with Ryan Buell. Everyone on the production team has been instructed not to provide me with any information about the case or the location.
I do not even know the clients' names or any other pertinent info about the investigation. Therefore, it would be literally impossible for me to "research" the cases.
Not that you have any reason to believe me, but the information that I relay to Ryan is spontaneously delivered and not "parlor tricks."
All the best,
Chip Coffey

Chip, I'm sure you have to deal with a lot of doubters in your line of work but please rest assured that, as doubters go, we try to be a little more open minded.
We're certainly not out to discredit anyone's claims, we're just trying to understand (in a way that can be verified) the underlying mechanisms behind the seemingly extraordinary results.
I'd like to apologize if you were in any way offended by my ponderings above, they are meant to examine the phenomenon, not you personally. I'd also like to thank you for stopping by here again, it's always good to get information from the source.

Gotta admit as eye rollers go Paranormal State has its moments from time to time but this was a solid episode. I don't know if it was a combination of the the case and the team nailing the research or the production side of the equation hitting it's stride but "Requiem" seemed to be above and beyond a standard episode of this series.
I am a bit of a skeptic myself, but find the show compelling (yes, I am it's bitch) to watch when my TiVo picks up a new episode. I dig that Chip responds on this site. I'm too cynical to buy completely into the idea of mediums, spiritualists, and psychics but when the PRS team does call for help outside their own team I always breath a sigh of relief when they bring in Mr. Coffey because for whatever reason I find him infinitely more credible than the others. Can't say why for sure, just that I do.
