GHI: Screaming Woods

GHI Visited a Wood in England referred to by the locals as the "Screaming Woods" and also investigated nearby Elvey Farm at the same time. They didn't get any activity at all at the farm but all three teams (Robb/Andy, Brian/Barry, Donna/Shannon) has similar experiences in the woods.

First off, they all heard the "screaming". On hearing the reputation my first guess would have been Owls, and although the team seems to have done a lot of research and fingered some different culprits the results are the same: They don't think the screams are paranormal.

The only thing that's really left to explain are the footsteps. Robb & Andy went in first and thought they heard footsteps coming towards them. They decided not to tell anyone (for fear of planting an idea in their heads) and just send the other two teams in. Both has similar experiences and in Donna & Shannon's case they said it definitely sounded like something large was moving through the wood.

Having done quite a bit of camping myself one thing that struck me right away from my first-ever camping trip was that I could always hear what sounded to me like approaching footsteps, but ultimately (I'm pretty sure) is just a conglomerate of forest sounds: wind moving a dead leaf, a pinecone falling from a tree, etc. Robb & Andy had the thermal and they saw no animal but without knowing just how clear the footsteps were my guess is that it's very possible they were just hearing footsteps because their brains want to make sense of the sounds they're hearing and footsteps is just a pattern that automatically seems to make sense.

Donna and Shannon's experience is different though. In my experience if you think you're hearing footsteps in the forest, you're probably not. When you hear footsteps, you'll know it because when someone steps on a dead leaf, snaps a twig or even brushes past a bush it's pretty loud and distinct compared to all the other sounds. Donna and Shannon specifically said they heard something big moving, so I'm confident there was actually something there — however they didn't have the thermal camera with them, so in their case there is no reason to rule out the local wildlife.

And no, The Ghost Hunters International team did not hold any of this up and claim that something supernatural was going on — so while this may not have been the most interesting investigation I think it's a refreshing change to finally see one where we have pretty good explanations for every single thing that occurred.

Sounds like GHI sort of became Monster Quest there for a minute — roaming about in the woods looking for a Bigfoot. :)

Since I have critizied the girls in the past, it's only fair to give them props for last night. They didn't scream or run away from anything. Particularly in the Woods when they heard what they thought were footsteps, I thought they handled themselves well.

I have to admit though: when Robb and Andy were telling the guy that they had debunked the screaming as just animal noises, I couldn't help but think that guy was sitting there thinking, "We KNOW it's animal noises! It's just a legend passed down that we have fun with. Stupid Americans. Did you REALLY believe we thought it was ghosts running around screaming???"

Todd @ 9:35 am

Crow I had the same thought. The client stated when they led them out and showed them the path that when people went into the woods they heard creaking noises. Well, woods+dark+wind=creaking noises.

I wasn't really satisfied with the "scream" identification. Maybe I didn't have the T.V. up loud enough (I almost missed the "per-haps" sound in the tavern). The recorded sound didn't sound that close to the vixen sound. But I believe that there was a natural explanation.

Caroline, I for one would be interested in learning more of your experience and also the pictures you took, and I'm sure others on here would be as well. Please don't be frightened by the "Skeptical" part of the name. It just means that we analyse evidence with a view to looking at all possible normal explanations first.

Recently a member here posted some video evidence and we gave it a go. I would love to hear what you experienced. I've had my own unexplainable experiences so am not a non-believer.

Please know that we keep opinions civil and won't attack anyone who presents evidence, just give you some honest opinions. We are all after only one thing–the truth.

About the Screaming Woods-I wrote Robb of GHI and he said that basically they have discounted a lot of what they experienced as "night sounds" from animals that they are simply not familiar with. If you found something interesting, it would be great to know about it!

thank you for your reply and am very glad that someone can help me with these images maybe and tell me what you think, but one of the images i took shows what i think is an orb with a face in it the face is very clear that was taken in the screaming woods, on a tour through the woods though we did not hear any screams but heard the footsteps, much futher into the woods 3 members of the group started to feel sick and their faces very cold, at this point they could not go any futher, the rest of us carried on, it was not long before i started to feel we were being watched i started to feel really sick and my legs heavy, at this point i called it a night with the group and start to make our way back..
We went to the black horse though all was calm there i took some pictures and on the fire place i come accros this again i dont know if its an orb or dust orbs but when i zoomed in there was a face, i know they say the mind is a powerfull thing but what do you make of it. the ones with the flash light in was taken in saint nicholas church though i dont remember there being any light there would you mind taking a look. please could you tell me where to send the pictures for you to look at

mnay thanks
caroline

Caroline: best place to put photos is an online photo hosting service such as Flickr, imageshack, or photobucket. Then you can start a new forum topic, post a link, and ask for some analysis.
