GHI: Nanteos Mansion

The Ghost Hunters International team arrived in Wales to investigate Nanteos mansion, a historic building that had even been linked into "Holy Grail" legend — something that was later determined by the team's research to be en entirely fictitious connection. Their guide, however, did not know this and told them how seven monks had lived in the house and were entombed in the basement. He also gave them a lot of great (verifiable) historical info on the previous owners of the mansion.

He had only had one personal experience, but it seemed a rather impressive one. While sitting alone one night at a table in the dining area he heard footsteps of someone walking behind him towards the bar. Turning around to greet the person he discovered there was no one there, and nowhere anyone who had been there might have gone (no door nearby, etc). Other people had reported seeing apparitions on the stairs and there was a specific account of one woman who had hidden her jewelry from her husband while she was sick. She lay in bed for a long time and never recovered from her illness; the apparition some have reported seeing is supposed to be this woman looking for her jewels.

Immediately, Brian and Andy start off with some terrific debunking. In the room where the footsteps had been heard Andy uses the thermal camera and can clearly see on the FLIR screen that there is a heating pipe running under the floor boards roughly along the path that the man had reported hearing someone walk. Either the pipes themselves or the expanding/contracting wood could easily have made sounds very much like someone walking.

Andy also climbed up into the attic (which was accessible only through a small crawlspace-hole in the ceiling of one of the rooms) to discover a fair amount of animal droppings. This could absolutely explain some previously unexplained noises and might even be mistaken for someone moving about in the same room or the next room over when in-fact the noises came from overhead.

Cut to Brian Harnois entering the crawlspace under the house. Did I mention that the research turned up that no monks had ever actually lived in the mansion (and had certainly not been buried there)? Brian seemed rather upset when he heard that during the evidence review; perhaps it's because the first thing he did when going through the crawlspace is announce that he saw a shadow coming right at him and that something evil was down there. Sound familiar? He did the exact same thing during the Lucedio Abbey investigation, earlier in the same episode. Can someone please fire him before not even the most tolerant skeptic can attempt to take this show seriously?

The only evidence the team got was — once again — on audio. One of the EVP's captured, I believe, on the stairs seemed to be saying, "Help me." It's somewhat clear. Also on the steps Andy reported hearing a woman weeping but nothing was apparently captured on audio. The other EVP actually seems to have been a response to a question. Donna asked if the spirit was upset because she was looking for her jewelry and there does seem to be a very faint, "yes" exactly where you would expect to hear someone answer.

Overall, a fair investigation. I'm getting really sick of EVPs though because even if they're blatantly clear there is only my trust of unknown Pilgrom crew members and the investigating team preventing me from immediately attributing the vocalizations to one of them. Then again, I suppose vague EVPs are preferable to a hunched-over guy wearing a sheet running back and forth behind a pool table.

Brian's little episode in the crawlspace really irritated me. It's another case where someone is supposedly having a paranormal experience and none of it is captured on film or audio. After crawling out, nothing more is done. It seems like they would have tried to get an image of this shadow, point a thermal camera down in the crawlspace or something. Of course, maybe they did but didn't find anything and the attempt was edited out in post-production.

The team was told that people have allegedly seen a woman in white walking down the stairs holding a candle. I wonder if she was holding a real candle or a ghost candle? And, by the way, how do you explain clothing? What is it exactly?

Kevin @ 11:41 pm

Sorry, I should have written, "how do you explain ghost clothing?"

Logisti @ 11:52 pm

Let's nail down an explanation for ghosts first, then we can investigate how they accessorize :)

I just wanted to comment briefly. I've seen all of the regular GH's and GHI episodes and I am a fan of each show respectively however I don't believe much of what is going on in the show myself and it's watched for purely entertainment purposes as I can't take any of it seriously. I'd further like to comment that after reading your site I've gone from being a somewhat skeptic to a big time skeptic. I do like the debunking methods of GHI but I fear that this is a way to draw in an audience as we are led to believe what "good guys" the GHI team are and how truthful and honest they are. Later on as the audience grows I'm sure we'll see more and more bullsh*t pop up as we've noticed on GH as of late!

For entertainment purposes I really enjoy both shows and all of the members seem very nice folks however this does not sway my beliefs in anyway and by watching each show I haven't become some big believer in the supernatural.

I can't really sit watching the show and intelligently believe anything of a "ghostly" nature is occurring when about 99.9% of it fails to show up on all that really, really expensive equipment they have floating around.

Not only have they invested a ton of money on their own equipment but also a crew's equipment following their every step. All this and still they fail to come up with any sold, tangible evidence?

It's just too difficult to believe any of it sadly!

I'm enjoying the antics though and maybe at some point someone can convince me ghosts are out there! I have more faith in aliens.

Cheers and keep up the awesome work on your blog!

Dr. Peter Venkman @ 8:12 pm

Brian gets chased out of a rabbit hole by a shadow again.

They present 2 evp's ( what could be 3 faint whispered words ) and Robb declares that there IS paranormal activity taking place here.

As a viewer, I don't feel too uncomfortable about that - his criteria seems to be exceedingly low, but it's his call.

Since the Nanteos Mansion is run as a B&B and advertises for weddings and such, I wonder if they are just thrilled at Andy exposing the rat and bat droppings in the kitchen ceiling ?
